The Reston Raiders Hockey Club annually hosts a two-day event for aspiring Level 1 and rising Level 2 on-ice officials. This is one of a series of nationally-sanctioned starter and refresher clinics for hockey referees (also known as "zebras" in their black and white jerseys) in the northern Virginia area. The clinics offer new challenges, and rewards.
"With our own corps of accredited officials, we have the ability to schedule weekend house league games from October to June utilizing young hockey players who see the value in working as referees at the same time," said Raiders Director of Refereeing.
"They earn good money -- up to $25 each game -- as well as improve their knowledge, while skating and improving their fitness", said the Raiders Director of Refereeing.
The Raiders referee program began shortly after the club was established in 1993. The current referees program was developed by the late Charlie Deprez, himself a player, coach and on-ice official in whose name the Raider Referee of the Year Award is now presented annually.
Aspiring hockey referees need to be:
* 12-years or older (exceptions can be made); * proficient skaters; * able to get to games on time; and * willing to make a commitment and keep it.
